The Northern Virginia Chorale performs at St. Mark's Lutheran
Church.

The seventy-voice Northern Virginia Chorale
is celebrating its thirty-first season. From its inception in
1975, the Chorale has sought to present performances of distinguished
choral music from a variety of genres. With a vast repertoire
ranging from contemporary to classical, the Chorale has achieved
a well earned reputation for providing the community with high
quality performances under the leadership of its artistic director,
Robert S. Webb,
Jr.
In addition to its three or four local concerts each season,
the Chorale has presented performances in several European venues.
In 1989, it participated in the First International Warwick
Choral Festival in Warwick, England, led by the world-renowned
composer, John Rutter. In 1990, the Chorale toured the Continent,
performing in Munich, Vienna, and Venice; and in 1995 while in
England, gave performances at Covent Garden, Salisbury Cathedral,
and the Bath Assembly Room.
The Chorale has also developed an exchange program
with the Claye Vocale in Claye-Souilly, France,
and gave concerts there in 1999 and 2002, as well as in Soave,
Italy in 2002. Closer to home, the Chorale has performed with
the Washington, Fairfax, and Alexandria Symphony orchestras, and
has given performances at the Kennedy Center, the National Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception, the Pageant of Peace, the National
Cathedral, and the French Embassy. The Chorale has also been honored
to be a lead choir for The Messiah Sing-Along
at the Kennedy Center, for several years.
As part of its outreach program, the Northern
Virginia Chorale gives numerous concerts for area retirement and
nursing homes, for veterans organizations, and for civic
and business events. It has also benefited from its association
with the Annandale Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College,
whose students receive college credit for participation in the
Chorale.
At our May, 2007 concert we will be celebrating
our thirty-first season, as well as the 400th Anniversary of
the founding of Virginia's Jamestown Colony, part of a
statewide celebration of Virginias history. Our
American Heritage concert will include Ode
to the Virginian Voyage originally written in 1606
by Michael Drayton as an exhortation for settlers to explore new
lands, and later orchestrated by composer, Randall Thompson in
1957. The concert will include other pieces by well known American
composers, Stephen Foster and Aaron Copland, whose music and lyrics
evoke both the American landscape as well as 19th and 20th century
history.
